Help for Single Mothers in California

California is well known as a “fashion state”. Maybe because Hollywood is there and because everything seems perfect: Their people, their beaches, its vibe, but beyond that, there are many people with the same problems as in the rest of United States.

The State of California has several programs to help their population in need. If you live in California, and you are a single mother, there are numerous agencies and organizations that can help by offering food, rental and foreclosure assistance, free or low-cost health care and prescriptions, and additional programs. Many of the benefits require the recipient to be low income or experiencing a financial crisis.

Following you will find a list of programs available to single mothers in California to help with their needs and their kids’ needs:

  • Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

The California Tribal TANF Program core purpose is to assist the Indian Tribes of California by providing the funding, tools, and resources necessary for each Tribe or Consortium to administer its own Tribal TANF Program. Tribal TANF Programs were designed to:

  • Aid for needy families so that children may be cared for in their own homes or in the homes of relatives;
  • End the dependence of needy parents on government benefits by promoting job preparation, work, and marriage;
  • Prevent and reduce the incidence of out-of-wedlock pregnancies and establish annual numerical goals for preventing and reducing the incidence of these pregnancies.

Tribes can define the service area, the service population, time limits (but not to exceed 60 months using TANF funds), benefits and services, eligibility criteria, and work activities. Tribal TANF Programs structure their program activities according to the needs of their people and their heritage to preserve and protect Native American communities and cultures.
